Lapporten in Abisko National Park

Lapporten, or The Lapponian Gate, is not Sweden’s highest mountain, but maybe one of the most spectacular. It’s situated in Abisko National Park in Northern Sweden and is a U-shaped valley with two peaks. It’s accessible and manageable – but it lacks marked trails. Lapporten is one of Sweden’s most depicted mountains!

Kebnekaise – Sweden’s highest mountain

The ultimate challenge in the Swedish mountains is of course Kebnekaise (2,103 metres above sea level), resting proudly in the Sarek National Park in Swedish Lapland. Apart from 100 glaciers the park is home to 13 of Sweden’s highest peaks. The ski runs are open until May, but during the summer the area is green. This is what to expect – 2,000 km2 of majestic and untouched wilderness, valleys and rivers that cut through the landscape. Kebnekaise Mountain Station at 690 metres, towards the lower part of the mountain, has 198 beds waiting for happy, but experienced, hikers. Remember, in Sarek there are no marked trails!

Åre – a charming mountain village by the Åreskutan

A bit further west, by the Norwegian border, the Sulitjelma mountain rises 1,860 metres into the sky. And south of the river Ume, the mountains are lower, until the Åreskutan (1,420 metres) in the village of Åre in Jämtland / Härjedalen. High season for downhill mountain biking in Åre Bike Park is from June until September, and from Åreskutan there are around 30 trails down the mountain. Tourists are taken up to the top by ski lifts where there are lovely, family friendly trails through the terrain. Those who would like a different perspective of nature can try tandem paraglider flights or zip lining!

Hills in Skåne and Småland

Southern Sweden is known for its flat landscape, but if you are travelling across the Öresund Bridge from Copenhagen there are nice mountains for families nearby. Hallandsåsen north of Ängelholm measures 212 metres above sea level. If you continue in to Småland, Tomtabacken(377 metres) awaits near the town of Jönköping. From the viewing point visitors get a fantastic view over all of Småland and the trail that gives you a great view of the area is Höglandsleden (The Highland Trail).
